Childress began his racing career in 1969, driving his own car in the NASCAR Cup Series. The team may have struggled in its early years, but it began to find success in the mid 1980s with legendary driver Dale Earnhardt. Earnhardt re-joined RCR in 1984, and he quickly became the face of the team. Over the next decade, Earnhardt and RCR won six Cup Series championships, 3 times back to back in 1986 and 1987, 1990 and 1991, and 1993 and 1994. In addition to their most famous driver, Richard Childress Racing has entertained with other excellent drivers over its years. including Kevin Harvick, Clint Bowyer, Tyler Reddick, and in 2023 Austin Dillon and Kyle Busch racing for the team in the NASCAR cup series.
