Road America is a road course on the NASCAR schedule in addition to The Glen, Sonoma and COTA. There are more road courses in the 2022 season that in most previous years and fans either rejoice or worry this may be a sign of things to come.

However Road America is a well established track and has been since its opening in 1955. It holds more than just NASCAR races and has a long history of great racing. We look at some of the track facts about road America below and learn a little more about one of the longest tracks of the year!

The Road America racetrack and complex is located about 50 km South of Green Bay and about 50 km North of Milwaukee in Wisconsin, USA.


How Long Is Road America?


Road America is a long track even for a road course and the main course is 4.048 miles long (6.515 Km) with 14 turns. it also has a small karting track of 0.8 miles (1.3 km)

Who owns Road America?

The speedway is owned and operated by Road America Inc. it was previously known as Elkhart Lake Road races from 1955 to 1960) and holds IndyCar, Sportscar and of course NASCAR cup races.


What is The Configuration of Road America?

The Road America racetrack is both technical and fast with 14 turns over its 4.048 miles including fast straights hairpins and dog legs. It is a challenge for drivers as it is both long and fast requiring a lot of memorization of the turns, breaking points and speeds.


What are The Lap Records at Road America?

Well these are not exactly definitive as the Cup series have only recently started running on the track, however prior to this is did hold Xfinity and IndyCar.

What Kind of Weather Conditions Does Road America Have?

Road America usually experiences fine weather for NASCAR racing in the Mid Summer. Temperatures can range from 25 to 31 and although rain can occur you are likely to get sunburnt than soaked so bring sunscreen and some good sunglasses. However it is next to lake Michigan and squalls can sweep of that with little warning so take a poncho as well.

How Much do NASCAR tickets cost at the Road America?

The ticket price range for Road America usually start at $75 for Saturday entry, 100 for the Sunday and Thursday to Sunday the price is $190

When Was Road America Constructed?

Road America was opened in 1955, however racing was going on in the area since the 1940s. The SCCA was organizing races in the village of Elkhart Lake from the 50s. In the 1955 Cliff Tufte began Road America and the layout and configuration is basically the same as it was back then.


How Many NASCAR Cup Races are held at Road America?

The Road America racetrack hosts only one NASCAR cup series race. This is at the begining of July in 2022 and called the Kwik Trip 250 present by Jockey. it is a 62 lap or 250 mile race around the 4 mile long circuit.

Who won the First NASCAR Cup race at Road America

Although this is a very well established race track the NASCAR cup series has only been there twice in the last 66 years. Once in 1956 where Bill Stroppe Won in a mercury race car and in 2021 when Chase Elliot won in a Chevy! From 1957 to 2020 there was no cup series racing at Road America.

However Xfinity has Run there since 2010.

There is not really a capacity for Road America as it is so large and elevated so there are plenty of natural hills and grandstand areas as well as mad made grandstands. However, a general attendance is considered to be about 150,000.

How Long is a Race at Road America?

The NASCAR Cup Series race is 250 miles at Road America which is 62 laps of the 4.048 mile road circuit.

  • The record time for the NASCAR Cup Series race is held by Chase Elliott at 2 hours 54 minutes and 33 seconds at the race in 2021. However at that time it was the only recent race held!
  • The record for the Xfinity racing is help by Scott Wimmer at 2hrs 11 mins and 38 seconds in 2019 however this was just a 45 lap race.



What is the Banking on Road America

Road America is a 4 mile long road racetrack, and its banking is not really a factor. However it does have elevated areas and sections to add difficultly for drivers.

What are the Rules for Bringing a Pet to the Road America

Pets are not allowed in the grandstands, but they are allowed in the camping areas. as long as not infield. All pets must be on a leash at all times and waste must be cleaned up. Service animals are permitted.

What Food and Drink Concessions Do They have at Road America

Road America has a wide variety of food and drink concessions. Some of the options include hot dogs, hamburgers, pit boss grills, pizza, tacos, chicken, sandwiches, salads, soft drinks, beer, and wine. You can bring your own food, beer and drinks too. Just make sure your cooler is 14x14x14 and soft sided, see below. Also you are not allowed to drink your own beer in concession areas.


Can you bring Coolers to Road America

Coolers are allowed to be taken into Road America even if they are soft sided (we have an article on the details here).you can bring food and drinks inside the speedway. You are allowed to bring your own beer also but not drink it in the concession areas, . No loose ice though so use cooling blocks.


Do you need Seat Cushions At Road America?

Yes rarely, the seating is mainly bleachers and seat cushions would be welcome here, and if you are sitting on the hills or grass, you can check out our cheap and premium options in the article below. Is There an Age Limit For Entering the Road America

There is no age limit for entering the Road America. However, children under the age of 12 the cup series races may cost just 10 dollars ( call in advance though) and children under 12 can go to NASCAR Xfinity / Truck races as well for free! To buy alcohol you will need to have ID and be over 21.

We suggest ear protection for little ears though.


What is the Policy For Wheelchair users at Road America

Road America is wheelchair accessible and the parking is also available. the restrooms are all mostly accessible as well.


What Should I Bring To The Road America

Some items that you may want to bring to the Road America races include sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, binoculars, and comfortable shoes, you can check their website for things you should not bring though most of it is fairly common sense.

You can also bring a cooler ( special size see here) with your own food and drinks and as we mentioned a seat cushion would be useful.


What Time Should I Arrive At The Road America

Road America has events throughout the race days , if you would like to see them then arrive before this time.

Arriving early also helps you avoid the queues if you are planning on getting food and drinks prior to the Green flag as well as enjoy the meet the drier and music experiences. Some of these may cost extra to be aware.
